Who We Are and How We Got That Way
Adaptations of fairy tales by
Northern Castle have a style of their own. The plays are interactive, and
appeal to children from 1 year to 100 years. But children are not the only fans of this company. Adults
come just to see and hear the gags that are written into the plays for
older audiences. The troupe is also adept at improv. For instance, when
you ask the children in the audience a question like, "Oh, dear, what
am I going to do now?", you are going to get a lot of answers, and
it's hilarious to see the actors trying to get the story back on track.
Northern Castle Theatre for Children mounted its first production, Snow
White, in the Spring of 1995. The company was then headed by directors
Oscar Davila and Mark Lariviere. Susan Forrest and Katryn played the roles
of the evil Queen and Snow White. In 1998, after Mark and Oscar moved to
San Francisco, Susan and Katryn took over the company, and produced two or three shows annually.
Katryn has moved to pursue theatre in New York.
In the future, Susan is joining with new partners to continue Northern
Castle, and to write more original pieces, like the recent Groach of the
Isle of Lok.
